Schools Competitions

St Andrews Burns Club supports competitions in the local schools.  At Madras College there are competitions in singing of Burns works and also in recitation of Burns poetry.   While in the local primary schools, the competition is the recitation of Burns works.  There are a range of trophies on offer and book tokens are donated by the club to the winners and runners up.

 The St Andrews Burns Club awarded the Dawson Memorial Trophy to Jamie McDonald of Lawhead Primary School for his excellent rendition of the Address To The Haggis in the School Burns Competition. The trophy was gifted to the school by Mrs Isobel Dawson in memory of her husband Bert Dawson, a Past President of St Andrews Burns Club and organizer of the Schools Burns Competition over many years, along with Past President Ian Johnston.   The Charles Alexander Vase was also awarded to Jamie as his was judged to be the best performance in Recitation or Song of a primary school pupil from all five primary schools in the Burns Club Schools Competition. This new award was sponsored by the ‘Alternative Burns Club’ in honour of their past member Charles Alexander and will be made annually.  Finally, Jamie also won the Charles Kennedy Memorial Trophy for Primary 6/7 Bagpiping at the Fife Association of Burns Clubs annual Fife Schools Burns Competition at Auchmuty High School on 7 March 2020.
